BOOK – QUESTIONING MATERIALDESIGN – GLAZED CONCRETE – POLYTEKNISK PUBLISHER 2014
GLAZED CONCRETE A SENSORY EXPRESSION
In my hands, glazed concrete and other materials become more than mere substances—they transform into poetry,
into expressions of both form and feeling. This book is an invitation to step into a world where ceramics are not rigid,
where concrete is not cold, and where surfaces call to be touched, kissed, and embraced.
QUETIONING MATERIAL DESIGN
At its heart, Questioning Material Design is a meditation on the alchemy of materials—an exploration of the
relationship between scientific rigor and artistic intuition. Here, ceramic glazed concrete is not merely a building
material but a vision: a flexible, large-scale, thin, and aesthetic form that integrates seamlessly into the world around
us, finding its place in coffee cups, artworks, facades, and urban landscapes.
DESIGN IN A BROAD PERSPECTIVE
My approach, Design in a Broad Perspective, is a method that merges the analytical and the emotional, the measurable and
the ineffable. It is a holistic way of thinking that weaves together technical material research, artistic practice,
design, and architecture—allowing each discipline to inform and challenge the other. In this confluence of science and art,
a new materiality emerges—one that is as intellectually engaging as it is sensorially evocative.
THE BOOK
This book is both a reflection and a proposition. It is filled with imagery—photographs by Ole Akhøj, Maja Bache, and
Vibeke Trolle—documenting the journey of material becoming, of concrete glazed to perfection, of experiments that seek not
just durability but beauty. It is for the thinker and the maker alike, for those who seek to understand materials from within
and those who wish to shape them with their hands.
INVITATION
In these pages, I share my years of research, practice, and artistic pursuit, offering not a final statement but an open
invitation—an invitation to question, to create, and to dream of materials that will shape our future cities and intimate spaces
alike. Questioning Material Design is a book of thought, touch, and transformation—a testament to the beauty of
interdisciplinary exploration and the profound impact materials can have on our lives, not just as objects but as companions in
our built environment.
