CERAMIC ON TOUR -GALLERY 21 MALMØ – 2013

With the mind of soapboxes of my childhood I transported the ceramic installations – passing the Øresund
between Denmark and Sweden by Øresunds Brigde – installing it all  at Gallery 21 in Malmø.

CHILDHOODS SOAPBOXCARS

Years ago, I set out on a journey from Copenhagen to Malmö, carrying with me a collection of
installations inspired by the soapbox cars of my childhood. These humble vehicles—crafted from wood
and imagination—were once my mode of transport as I raced down the streets, a small child navigating
through time and space. Just like those carefree days of my youth, the pieces I created traveled with
me across the Øresund Bridge, connecting the past with the present, memory with reality.

BROKEN MEMORIES

But the journey itself—though quicker than my childhood ferry rides between Denmark and Sweden—
was not without its own challenges. The cars I had packed, as fragile as the memories they represented,
were installed in the exhibition as though they had broken down, reminding me that even in a faster-paced
world, problems still arise, and the passage of time is rarely without its setbacks.

FOUR ROOMS – FOUR INSTALLATIONS – FOUR POEMS

The exhibition Ceramic on Tour was designed specifically for the four rooms at Gallery 21 in Malmö.
Each room became its own universe, each installation a dialogue between form, material, and memory.
The pieces were not just objects; they were snapshots of time, imbued with a sense of nostalgia and the
movement of past moments. Alongside each installation, I included a poem in the catalog that served
as a reflection on the work, providing context and inviting the viewer to engage with the concepts of
time, space, and memory in new ways.

POCKETS OF TIME

In the first room, Pockets of Time, I explored the notion of time as something that can be carried with
us, as a pocketed memory that we can take out, examine, and relive. The ceramic forms—soapbox cars,
glazed pots, and cast clay boxes—became symbolic of moments frozen in time, much like how we might
hold onto memories from our childhood, reimagining them through adult eyes. The installation
encouraged the viewer to think about the way time moves, sometimes forward, sometimes backward,
but always continuing, ever-changing.

CROSSING ØRESUND

In those days, when the ferry crossed the Øresund between Denmark and Sweden, the journey was long,
and the anticipation of arriving was part of the experience. Now, crossing by the bridge, the process was
faster, yet the memories of that slower, more reflective crossing stayed with me, as did the realization
that even in the rush of modern life, we still carry those slower moments within us. The breakdowns of
my childhood soapbox cars became a metaphor for the unpredictable nature of life itself—unexpected,
yet formative.

REFLECTING ON DUALITIES

The exhibition at Gallery 21 became a space to reflect on these dualities—the speed of modern life and
the lingering pace of memory. Each installation was meant to challenge the viewer to slow down,
to consider the past, and to walk backward in time for just a moment, as I did in my childhood.
The experience was one of both nostalgia and revelation, a reminder that even as we rush forward,
there are moments worth pausing for.

CONVERSATION ON TIME

Each piece in Ceramic on Tour was a step in a larger conversation about time, memory, and the
connections between them. The installation, created for the four rooms of the gallery, was more than
just an exhibit—it was a journey, one that invited viewers to join me in the act of collecting time, and
to reflect on the many ways we hold the past within us, even as we move toward the future.
