NEVER LONELY

INFLATABLE PVC FAMILY FOR THE LONELY TRAVELLER- 1996

LONELINESS

Loneliness can be an unwanted companion, especially when traveling. But what if family could be packed up, carried
along, and set up wherever you go? In 1996, as part of my final work at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School
of Visual Arts, I created my own solution— a family that never leaves, never complains, and never asks for more than
air to exist.

PVC-FACTORY

At a PVC factory, I welded them together. The workers, intrigued by my idea, lent me their antique welding machine—
a relic from another time. Its worn edges and humming presence gave life to my inflatable family. For that, I am grateful.

BUY ME LOVE LOVE LOVE….

This PVC family offers something extraordinary: flexibility. They can be exactly what you need them to be. A silent
companion in an empty hotel room. A father figure who offers presence without expectations. A mother who doesn’t judge.
A sibling who takes up space without making a sound. Do you want a father with eyes, or does anonymity suit you better?
Their features—fluid, adjustable, optional—allow you to shape them as you wish.

ARTIFICIAL FAMILY

For my final exhibition, I presented my PVC family in Thorvaldsen’s old workshop at Charlottenborg, in the Portico.
Within this historic space, once home to classical craftsmanship, I introduced something entirely different—an artificial
yet strangely intimate version of family, caught between presence and absence.

SURREAL BELONGING

On stage, in performance, they stood with me. A surreal gathering of belonging and detachment, of human need and
synthetic comfort. Photographs by my real sister Nina Bache capture these moments—me and my PVC family, a staged yet
deeply personal reflection of what it means to be together, even when alone. Wherever I go, I am never truly alone.
