THE SCENE IS SET-PUBLIC ART HELSINGØR 2018
TRACING A RED THREAD THROUGH TIME IN HELSINGØR
Through an open call by the Danish Art Council, this public art installation
created a red narrative that wove through the city of Helsingør and its
cultural center, Toldkammeret. Comprising four interconnected parts,
the installation sought to bridge the past with the present, linking the former
Customs Chamber with its historical roots in Øresund, the heart of Helsingør’s
maritime heritage. It also connected this legacy to the modern cultural landscape,
where the space now thrives as a hub for contemporary creativity and activity.
THE RED THREAD REFERING TO ROYAL DANISH CUSTOM HOUSE
The vibrant red thread echoed the deep Oldenburg red of the Royal Danish
Customs House sign, a symbol still hanging at the entrance of the
historic chamber. This color, chosen for its historical significance, serves as a
visual anchor—reminding us of the past while guiding us forward into
Helsingør’s unfolding cultural story.

The carpenter Sine Pejs helped my mounting the urban art.
In my studio, rethinking the ground plans meant for the entrance walls—only to learn no screws
were allowed in the historic Tollchamber. Instead, they now rest uncomfortably on the floor, a
silent play of stenography. Photos: Anja
